About First Aid
About this summary: Written by Swasthya Plus for Indian readers, using MedlinePlus, National Library of Medicine as a reference source. For personal guidance, please consult a qualified Health Expert.
Accidents happen — someone chokes, gets stung by an insect, faints, or is injured. Knowing when to call 112 — India's unified emergency number — is important. 112 is for life-threatening emergencies. While help is on the way, basic first aid can save a life.
Skills worth learning:
- CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) — for someone whose breathing or heart has stopped
- Heimlich manoeuvre (abdominal thrusts) — for someone choking
- Recovery position — for someone unconscious but breathing
- Controlling bleeding — firm, gentle pressure with a clean cloth or gauze; add layers on top if blood soaks through, do not remove the first layer
- Cleaning wounds — cool running water, then an antiseptic
Keep a first-aid kit at home and in your car. It should include a basic first-aid guide, sterile gauze and bandages, adhesive tape, antiseptic (Dettol or Savlon), a pair of gloves, scissors, a thermometer, paracetamol, and ORS (oral rehydration salts) sachets. Read the guide so you know how to use the items before you actually need them.
In an emergency, dial 112.
