Typhus

Typhus is an infection passed to people through infected fleas, lice or mites. Seek medical care promptly if you develop fever, headache or a rash after a possible bite or exposure.

Symptoms and treatment

Symptoms can also include nausea, vomiting and feeling generally unwell. Tell your Health Expert about recent travel and possible exposure to insects or mites. Treatment usually involves antibiotics; severe illness may need hospital care. Early treatment helps prevent serious complications.

Reducing your risk

Use insect repellent and wear clothing that covers your arms and legs in areas where infection occurs. Keep clothes and bedding clean, and avoid sharing clothing or bedding that may carry lice.
