About Eye Diseases
About this summary: Written by Swasthya Plus for Indian readers, using MedlinePlus, National Library of Medicine as a reference source. For personal guidance, please consult a qualified Health Expert.
Eye diseases span from common and easily treated (refractive error, cataract) to sight-threatening emergencies (retinal detachment, acute glaucoma). In India, cataract remains the leading cause of blindness, followed by uncorrected refractive error, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.
The big ones to know about
- Cataract — clouding of the lens; painless, gradual blur; cured by day-care surgery with an intraocular lens. Available under Ayushman Bharat and state schemes. Don't delay past "mature" stage.
- Refractive errors — myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, presbyopia after 40. Glasses, contacts, or (for stable prescriptions) laser surgery. See Refractive Errors.
- Glaucoma — silent loss of peripheral vision from raised eye pressure. After 40, yearly pressure checks pick it up. Treated with drops, laser, or surgery. See Glaucoma.
- Diabetic retinopathy — #1 cause of new blindness in working-age Indians. Screen annually from diagnosis (type 2) or from year 5 (type 1). See Diabetic Eye Problems.
- Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) — central vision loss in older adults; injection treatments work for the wet form.
- Retinal detachment — sudden floaters, flashes, curtain across vision — emergency, same-day vitreoretinal surgery.
- Infections and injuries — see Eye Infections and Eye Injuries.
- Amblyopia and squint — treatable in children; delay past age 7–8 makes it permanent.
What changes outcomes
- Screening, not symptoms — most sight-threatening eye disease is silent until late.
- Children: vision screening in school; patch therapy for amblyopia before age 7.
- Adults with diabetes: annual dilated retinal exam.
- Adults over 40: annual eye check including pressure and retina.
- Avoid "eye drops" purchased over-the-counter for any red/painful/blurry eye — never use steroid drops without an eye doctor; they cause glaucoma and perforated corneas.
- Avoid unregulated "eye-strengthening" oils, drops, and home remedies (kajal, breast-milk, urine, onion juice) — all cause real harm.
