Routine eye care is one of the highest-value, most under-used health habits in India. Cataract and uncorrected refractive error together cause the majority of avoidable blindness here — both are entirely treatable when picked up in time.

Eye diseases span from common and easily treated (refractive error, cataract) to sight-threatening emergencies (retinal detachment, acute glaucoma). In India, cataract remains the leading cause of blindness, followed by uncorrected refractive error, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

Diabetes damages the blood vessels of the retina, lens, and optic nerve — and diabetic retinopathy is now the leading cause of preventable blindness in working-age Indian adults. The key message is simple: every person with diabetes needs a dilated retinal exam every year, whether their vision feels fine or not.

Pink eye (conjunctivitis) is inflammation of the thin transparent layer covering the white of the eye. It's extremely common — especially in Indian monsoon season — and usually harmless, but needs the right type of treatment.

Eye infections range from minor (viral conjunctivitis) to sight-threatening (corneal ulcer, endophthalmitis). The single most important Indian rule: any red painful eye with reduced vision needs an eye doctor the same day — and no one should use steroid-containing eye drops without an eye doctor's prescription.

Eyewear includes glasses, contact lenses, and protective/sunglasses. Getting the right prescription and a proper fit matters — underused and badly fitted glasses are both common problems in India.

Amblyopia ("lazy eye") is reduced vision in one (or rarely both) eyes because the brain ignored its input during childhood. It is usually treatable if caught before about age 7–8; after that window, the vision loss is largely permanent.

Refractive errors — myopia (short sight), hypermetropia (long sight), astigmatism, and presbyopia after 40 — are the most common vision problem in the world. Uncorrected refractive error is a major driver of poor school performance, road accidents, and falls in older Indians — and it is entirely treatable with glasses.

The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Retinal disorders are among the most serious eye diseases because the retina does not regenerate — delay means permanent vision loss.

Tears keep the surface of the eye smooth and healthy. Problems fall into two buckets: dry eye (not enough good-quality tears) — increasingly common with screens and AC — and watery eye (blocked drainage or irritation).

Colour blindness is a usually-inherited difficulty in distinguishing certain colours, most commonly red from green. It affects about 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women.

Eye injuries are common and often preventable. In India, workplace injuries, cricket/squash, firecracker (Diwali), welding without shields, and chemical splashes are the main mechanisms.
