About Urinary Incontinence
About this summary: Written by Swasthya Plus for Indian readers, using MedlinePlus, National Library of Medicine as a reference source. For personal guidance, please consult a qualified Health Expert.
Urinary incontinence is the accidental leaking of urine. It affects millions of Indian adults, especially women — yet most never seek help because of embarrassment. Most forms are treatable.
Main types
- Stress incontinence — leakage with coughing, laughing, sneezing, lifting, exercise. Common after childbirth and around menopause.
- Urge incontinence — a sudden, strong need to urinate, and leaking before reaching the toilet. Common with ageing, some neurological conditions, and bladder infections.
- Mixed — both stress and urge together.
- Overflow incontinence — small constant leaks because the bladder doesn't empty fully; often with an enlarged prostate in men.
- Functional incontinence — can't reach the toilet in time due to mobility or cognitive problems.
Common causes and triggers
- Childbirth and weak pelvic floor muscles.
- Menopause and oestrogen decline.
- Enlarged prostate in men.
- Urinary tract infections.
- Constipation.
- Obesity.
- Chronic cough (smoking, COPD).
- Diabetes.
- Neurological disease (stroke, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis).
- Some medicines.
When to see a Health Expert
- Any regular leaking.
- Sudden new incontinence.
- Leaking with back pain, fever, or blood in urine.
- Leaking with numbness or weakness in the legs — urgent.
- Impact on sleep, work or going out.
Treatment — much more than pads
- Pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises — first-line for stress incontinence; effective when done consistently for 3 months.
- Bladder training — scheduled toilet visits, gradually stretching intervals.
- Weight loss — reduces stress incontinence.
- Treating underlying causes — UTI, diabetes, constipation, BPH.
- Medicines for urge incontinence.
- Surgery (sling procedures for stress; bulking agents; for men with BPH, prostate procedures) — highly effective in selected cases.
- Pads and incontinence garments — useful while other treatment works, not a long-term solution.
Talking to a Health Expert about incontinence is not a small thing in India — cultural embarrassment delays many people for years. It is a medical condition. A brief clinic visit, simple tests and a few months of targeted exercises or medication transform quality of life for most people.
