About Hyperglycemia
About this summary: Written by Swasthya Plus for Indian readers, using MedlinePlus, National Library of Medicine as a reference source. For personal guidance, please consult a qualified Health Expert.
Hyperglycaemia is high blood sugar — the hallmark of diabetes, and also a sign of poor control in someone already treated. Recognising it early — and its two dangerous acute forms, DKA and HHS — saves lives.
Everyday signs of high sugar
- Excessive thirst and urination (especially at night).
- Tiredness, blurred vision.
- Slow-healing wounds, recurrent boils, fungal infections (especially genital).
- Unexplained weight loss in new type 1 or poorly controlled type 2.
- Increased hunger, headache, irritability.
Red flag — diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
- More common in type 1 diabetes, but can happen in type 2 (especially with SGLT2 inhibitors).
- Warning signs: very high sugars + nausea/vomiting + abdominal pain + deep rapid breathing + sweet/fruity breath + drowsiness/confusion.
- Triggers: missed insulin, infection (Indian heat-related dehydration, gastroenteritis), steroid use, new-onset type 1.
- Action: go to hospital immediately; dial 112 if drowsy. Treatment is IV fluids + insulin + potassium monitoring.
Red flag — hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic state (HHS)
- More common in older adults with type 2 diabetes.
- Severe dehydration + very high sugars (often > 600) + confusion or coma, without ketones.
- Often triggered by infection (UTI, chest infection) or missed medicines. Mortality is high — hospital care is urgent.
What to do for everyday high readings
- Drink plenty of water (unless fluid restricted).
- Don't eat extra carbs hoping to "cover" the spike.
- Review recent meals, missed doses, illness, steroids.
- If repeatedly above target, talk to your doctor about adjusting medicines — don't self-increase insulin without guidance.
- Check for infection — UTI, fungal, tooth abscess, skin infection — a hidden infection often drives sudden rises.
When to go to hospital
- Sugar repeatedly > 300 mg/dL with symptoms.
- Vomiting / unable to keep fluids down + high sugars.
- Drowsiness, rapid breathing, fruity breath, confusion.
- Persistent fever, severe infection, or severe dehydration with diabetes.
